چکیده

A special finite element method based on approximate component mode synthesis (ACMS) was introduced in [U. Hetmaniuk, R. Lehoucq, A special finite element method based on component mode synthesis, ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis, 44 (2010), 401-420]. ACMS was developed for second order elliptic partial differential equations with rough or highly varying coefficients. Here, a parallel implementation of ACMS is presented and parallel scalability issues are discussed for representative examples. Additionally, a parallel domain decomposition preconditioner (FETI-DP) is applied to solve the ACMS finite element system. Weak parallel scalabilty results for ACMS are presented for up to 1024 cores. Our numerical results also suggest a quadratic-logarithmic condition number bound for the preconditioned FETI-DP method applied to ACMS discretizations.

Extended finite element simulation of crack propagation in cracked Brazilian disc

The cracked Brazilian disc (CBD) specimen is widely used in order to determine mode-I/II and mixed-mode fracture toughness of a rock medium. In this study, the stress intensity factor (SIF) on the crack-tip in this specimen is calculated for various geometrical crack conditions using the extended-finite element method (X-FEM). This method is based upon the finite element method (FEM). In this m...

This study shows how to create different types of crack and discontinuities by using isogeometric analysis approach (IGA) and extended finite element method (XFEM). In this contribution, two unique features of isogeometric analysis approach are utilized to create discontinuous zones. Discontinuities consist of crack and cohesive zone. In isogeometric analysis method NURBS is used to approximate...

A Special Finite Element Method Based on Component Mode Synthesis

The goal of our paper is to introduce basis functions for the finite element discretization of a second order linear elliptic operator with rough or highly oscillating coefficients. The proposed basis functions are inspired by the classic idea of component mode synthesis and exploit an orthogonal decomposition of the trial subspace to minimize the energy. Numerical experiments illustrate the ef...

Mixed-Mode Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Functionally Graded Materials Using Enriched Finite Elements

Three-dimensional enriched finite elements are used to compute mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for three-dimensional cracks in elastic functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are subject to general mixed-mode loading. The method, which advantageously does not require special mesh configuration/modifications and post-processing of finite element results, is an enhancement of previou...
